Because symptoms of head and neck cancer may be similar to those of common benign conditions, there may be a delay in diagnosis and treatment. If caught early, many of these cancers are eminently curable. Advanced cancers, on the other hand, may be complicated to treat, with a poorer survival rate.
As with most cancers, head and neck cancers are most easily treated if they are caught early. Happily, there are some early warning signs that can clue us in to the possibility that we may be dealing with a serious disease.
Head and neck cancer may be difficult to detect in the early stages and extremely challenging to treat when advanced, so it would obviously be ideal if one did not get it at all.
Head and Neck cancers originate from the larynx (voice box), mouth (including the lips and tongue), pharynx (throat), nose and sinuses, and salivary glands. There are other cancers which are found in the region but these are grouped together due to similar causes, presentations and treatments.
